How to determine your skin type
Understanding your skin type is the foundation of proper care. It is precisely what determines how your face will react to cosmetics, which products are worth including in your care routine and which to avoid. If care is chosen incorrectly, it may not only fail to bring the desired result but also worsen the condition of the skin — causing dryness, excessive oiliness, irritation or breakouts. Many people make mistakes on this point. Skin types are not just a term, but living characteristics that change with age, season and hormonal background. That is why it is important not only to “determine” your skin once, but to listen to its needs regularly. This will allow you to consciously choose cosmetics, avoid irritation and ensure effective care for your face.
What is a skin type
Your facial skin type is an individual characteristic that determines how your skin behaves under normal conditions (whether it is prone to dryness or oiliness, whether it requires enhanced moisturising, or perhaps the gentlest possible care). Knowing your skin type is important in order to choose cosmetics correctly, avoid irritation, maintain a healthy look of the face and prevent cosmetic problems. Different facial skin types have completely different needs. For example, oily skin needs thorough cleansing and light moisturising, while dry skin needs intensive nourishment and protection against drying out. What works for one person may not work for another — precisely because of the difference in skin type. Even though there is a clear classification of skin types, it is worth understanding that this is not a lifelong diagnosis. This indicator is influenced by many factors — hormonal background, age, climate, diet, stress. With age or as a result of external influences, the skin can change, which is why it is important to assess its condition regularly and adjust care if necessary. There are several basic skin types. Each of them has its own characteristics and requires a different approach. For example, normal skin is well balanced but requires maintaining that balance, while combination skin combines oily areas (mainly in the T-zone) and dry areas on the cheeks. If you do not know how to determine your skin type, it can be done both at home and with the help of a specialist. The simplest test is to observe how the skin behaves after washing without applying a cream (whether an oily sheen appears, whether you feel tightness, or whether it remains comfortable). This will help you take the first step toward conscious care and healthy skin.
Basic skin types
Determining your skin type is the foundation from which all conscious care begins. No matter how old you are, how often you use cosmetics and how active your lifestyle is, correctly determining your skin type will allow you to choose products that will work precisely for you. The normal skin type is the most balanced and does not create serious problems in care. It is characterized by the following features:
- even facial complexion and skin texture;
- no dryness, oiliness or irritation;
- barely visible pores;
- soft, smooth, elastic skin;
- pimples or comedones rarely appear;
- it does not require aggressive cleansing or moisturising;
- it responds well to most cosmetics.
It requires minimal but regular care. The dry skin type is characterized by a lack of sebum and moisture, which makes the skin sensitive. Main features:
- the skin often flakes, especially in winter or after washing;
- a feeling of tightness is noticeable;
- it looks matte and thin;
- pores are almost invisible, but the skin ages quickly;
- prone to irritation and sensitivity;
- redness forms easily;
- it requires intensive moisturising, nourishment and gentle cleansing;
- it tolerates alcohol-based toners poorly.
The oily skin type is characterized by active work of the sebaceous glands and a tendency toward acne. Properties:
- a pronounced oily sheen, especially in the T-zone;
- enlarged pores, particularly on the nose, chin and forehead;
- frequent breakouts, comedones (blackheads), pimples;
- the skin feels denser to the touch;
- cosmetics quickly slide off the face;
- fewer wrinkles with age — oily skin ages more slowly;
- it requires thorough cleansing, toning, light gel products;
- excessive degreasing causes even more oiliness.
The combination skin type is the most common and combines different areas with dryness and oiliness:
- an oily T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and dry or normal cheeks;
- acne breakouts mainly in the center of the face;
- uneven relief and complexion of the skin;
- difficulty in choosing a universal product;
- the need to combine care — for example, a moisturising cream for the cheeks and a mattifying gel for the forehead;
- it often changes depending on the season (oilier in summer, drier in winter);
- it requires a comprehensive approach to cleansing, moisturising and protection.
The sensitive skin type can accompany any type and requires especially gentle care. It is characterized by:
- a tendency toward redness, itching, burning;
- the skin reacts to changes in temperature, cosmetics, hard water;
- frequent allergic reactions;
- the need for hypoallergenic products.
The type can change with age, under the influence of climate, hormonal changes and lifestyle. For example, an oily skin type in adolescence can become normal at the age of 25, and then — dry after 40. A careful analysis of your skin and observation of its reactions to cosmetics, diet and care will help you better understand its needs. And regularly updating your care to match the current condition will allow you to keep your skin healthy and youthful for longer.
How to determine your skin type
Knowing what the skin types are, it is easy to determine your own by following a simple set of instructions:
- Cleanse the skin of your face. Wash with a mild product free of aggressive ingredients. Do not use toners, serums, creams or any other products after washing — the skin must be “bare.”
- Wait a couple of hours. Do not touch your face with your hands, do not apply any care. This time will allow the skin to reveal its characteristics — whether it will become oily or remain dry.
- Assess the condition of the skin visually and by touch. Step up to a mirror in daylight. Pay attention to whether there is a sheen on the forehead, nose, chin (the T-zone), flaking, redness, a feeling of tightness, whether enlarged pores, breakouts, comedones or pimples are visible, and what the texture of the skin is to the touch — smooth or rough.
- Wipe your face with a tissue. Take a regular paper tissue and press it to your face (forehead, nose, cheeks, chin). Then examine the tissue. If there are oily marks from all zones — you have oily skin. If oil is visible only in the forehead, nose and chin zone — combination. If there are no marks on the tissue, and the skin is flaking or tight — it is a dry type. And if the tissue is almost clean, but the skin is soft, smooth, without an oily sheen or dryness — it is normal.
- Listen to your sensations. Skin type is determined not only visually — what you feel is also important. Burning or redness after washing may indicate sensitive skin; if you feel dryness right after washing — the skin is probably dry. If your face quickly becomes oily during the day — it is an oily or combination type.
Remember, over time the skin type can change:
- with age (for example, oily becomes drier);
- depending on the season (in summer the skin becomes oily, in winter — it flakes);
- due to hormonal changes, stress, diet or taking medications.
In such cases, it is better to be guided by the condition of the skin in a particular period and adjust your care accordingly.
Why it is important to correctly determine your skin type
Determining your skin type is important for several reasons:
- preventing improper care — products not suited to the skin type can worsen its condition;
- preventing problems — well-chosen care reduces the risk of breakouts, irritation, dryness or oily sheen;
- increasing the effectiveness of care — the skin receives exactly the ingredients it needs in its current condition;
- comfort and self-confidence — properly cared-for skin looks healthy, which boosts self-esteem and comfort.
As a result, determining your skin type makes it possible to develop an individual and effective care plan. This applies both to daily cleansing and to the choice of masks, peels and SPF protection products. For an accurate result, it is recommended to perform a skin type test at home or to visit a cosmetologist. Remember, even the most expensive cosmetics will not be beneficial if they do not match the needs of your skin. Instead of experimenting on your own face — it is better to accurately determine your skin type and stick to care that truly suits it.
Care characteristics depending on skin type
The only correct strategy is to choose cosmetics taking into account age and skin type. For example, oily skin, which produces an excessive amount of sebum, requires the following care:
- cleansing twice a day with gels or foams containing salicylic acid or zinc;
- using light moisturising emulsions or water-based gels;
- weekly clay masks to reduce oiliness;
- choosing non-comedogenic products;
- avoiding alcohol-based toners, which can cause the opposite effect.
Cosmetics should also be chosen according to age:
- up to 25 — light cleansing gels, anti-breakout products;
- after 30 — adding antioxidant serums, sebum control;
- after 40 — anti-ageing gels with moisturising ingredients, light retinols.
Dry skin is characterized by insufficient sebum production, tightness, flaking and a tendency toward early wrinkle formation, so you should use:
- gentle, sulfate-free cleansing — milk or a cream-gel;
- the mandatory use of a serum with hyaluronic acid;
- rich creams with ceramides, oils, squalane;
- giving up aggressive peels;
- regular use of moisturising masks.
At the same time, the advice for different age groups also differs:
- up to 25 — gentle moisturising;
- after 30 — anti-ageing complexes with antioxidants;
- after 40 — creams with retinol, peptides, lipids.
Combination skin requires:
- double cleansing — a gel for the T-zone, milk for the cheeks;
- multi-zone care (multimasking) — using different products on different areas of the face;
- balancing toners with niacinamide or green tea;
- light moisturisers with a mattifying effect.
According to age, the following is used:
- up to 25 — basic care, sebum control;
- after 30 — anti-ageing prevention in the T-zone, nourishment in the dry zones;
- after 40 — hybrid products with moisturising and an anti-ageing effect.
Normal skin is a balanced type that requires:
- gentle cleansing with gels or foams;
- light moisturising creams with hyaluronic acid;
- weekly masks to maintain firmness;
- SPF protection every day.
Cosmetics by age:
- up to 25 — minimalist care;
- after 30 — adding antioxidants and mild acids;
- after 40 — nourishing creams with peptides and retinol.
You should know exactly how to determine your facial skin type, because correct determination is the first step toward a beautiful, healthy face.
