Retinol in cosmetics

Retinol is one of the most popular ingredients in cosmetics, actively used in skin care. Thanks to its ability to influence cellular renewal, it helps even out the complexion of the face, reduce the visibility of wrinkles, fight post-acne pigmentation and stimulate collagen production. This is precisely why retinol for the skin is considered an effective remedy in the fight against the first signs of ageing. Products with retinol are highly active, so they are not suitable for every skin type. They require careful introduction into the care routine and strict adherence to the rules of application. Knowing what retinol is and what it is used for helps to avoid irritation, pigmentation and other unpleasant reactions, ensuring the maximum benefit from its use.

What is retinol

Retinol is an active form of vitamin A that takes part in the processes of skin regeneration, regulates the work of the sebaceous glands, promotes cell renewal and improves the overall condition of the skin. It is used in serums, creams and medicinal products thanks to its unique ability to penetrate the deeper layers of the epidermis and stimulate cell renewal. However, the skillful use of retinol is no less important, because an excessive or improper dose can cause irritation. At the chemical level, retinol is vitamin A in a form that the skin is able to convert into retinoic acid – the active substance that directly affects cell receptors. This conversion takes place gradually, which is why the product acts gently, especially in comparison with other forms of the vitamin. In cosmetology, retinol is often recommended as a preventive remedy against premature ageing. However, products with retinol are not suitable for everyone – they have certain contraindications and can cause adverse reactions.

Properties of retinol that are beneficial for the skin

Retinol for the face is considered one of the most effective ingredients in skin care cosmetics. It is actively used in the treatment of acne, pigmentation, wrinkles and dullness of the skin. Thanks to its ability to penetrate the deep layers of the dermis, retinol triggers the mechanisms of cell renewal and stimulates collagen production. But its action is not limited only to rejuvenation:

  • acceleration of cellular renewal – it stimulates the shedding of old cells and promotes the appearance of new ones, thanks to which the skin becomes smoother and more even;
  • reduction of wrinkles and fine lines – regular use of products with retinol promotes collagen production, which increases skin elasticity and reduces the signs of age-related changes;
  • improvement of skin complexion – it effectively fights hyperpigmentation, brightens dark spots and evens out the facial colour;
  • control over acne – thanks to its ability to normalise the work of the sebaceous glands and clear the pores, retinol helps reduce breakouts and prevent their appearance;
  • narrowing of pores – by stimulating cell renewal and cleansing the skin, it promotes a reduction in porosity and an overall improvement in texture;
  • protection against photoaging – it repairs damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, reducing the negative effects of sun exposure;
  • improvement of the skin's microrelief – with regular use, it helps even out the surface of the skin.

Given what retinol is recommended for, you should approach the rules of its use very carefully. It should be introduced gradually, starting with the lowest concentrations, and you must use a sunscreen to avoid irritation and photosensitivity.

How to use retinol in skin care

Retinol is an ingredient that requires caution during use. Improper use can lead to irritation, dryness and even flaking of the skin. Therefore, it is important to learn the basic rules for introducing retinol into your daily routine:

  • start with the minimum concentration – for beginners, a concentration of 0.1% or 0.2% is optimal; this will allow the skin to get used to the active substance;
  • use retinol at night – it is photosensitizing, so it is better to apply it in the evening to avoid the negative effect of UV rays;
  • apply only to dry skin – after washing, wait 15–20 minutes for the skin to dry completely;
  • use a small amount – a portion the size of a pea is enough for the whole face;
  • always apply a moisturising cream – due to the drying effect of retinol, it is important to finish your care with a cream that moisturises and soothes well;
  • do not forget about SPF – even on cloudy days, skin with retinol becomes sensitive to the sun;
  • gradually increase the frequency – start with once a week, gradually working up to three times, and then – if necessary – to daily use;
  • avoid applying it to sensitive areas – retinol should not be applied to the skin around the eyes, the corners of the mouth and the sides of the nose, unless it is a specialized product for these zones.

Also remember what retinol must not be combined with:

  • acids (AHA, BHA);
  • vitamin C (ascorbic acid) – in a single routine;
  • benzoyl peroxide;
  • masks or peels with abrasive particles;
  • essential oils or fragrance components.

The correct use of retinol makes it possible to achieve a real improvement in the condition of the skin, but it is important to follow the instructions and avoid aggressive combinations.

Retinol for different skin types

Cosmetics with retinol should be chosen depending on the skin type:

  1. Dry skin. Retinol can cause additional dryness, so it is recommended to use products with a low concentration in combination with nourishing creams or oils. It is better to choose cosmetics in the form of a cream containing moisturising ingredients – hyaluronic acid, panthenol, ceramides. Retinol for wrinkles on dry skin is quite effective.
  2. Oily skin. This skin type responds well to retinoids, because retinol helps normalise the work of the sebaceous glands. It is particularly effective for acne, enlarged pores and post-acne marks. You can use formulas in the form of serums or gels.
  3. Combination skin. It requires an especially gentle approach. It is worth applying retinol spot-wise or only to the zones with increased oiliness. Products with a medium concentration in the form of light emulsions work well.
  4. Sensitive skin. You should start with the minimum dose, gradually increasing the frequency. A mandatory companion is a soothing cream and the absence of other active ingredients in your care.
  5. Normal skin. Almost any format of retinol can be used.

Retinol is a universal ingredient of anti-ageing care, but for effectiveness and safety it is important to choose it taking into account the individual characteristics of the skin.

Retinol in the composition of cosmetics

Retinol in cosmetics acts as an active molecule that triggers regeneration processes in the skin. With regular use, the signs of acne are reduced, the facial complexion evens out, the depth of wrinkles decreases, and the skin becomes smoother, more elastic and firmer. The following products can be used:

  1. A toner with retinol – an ideal option to start with. The product gently cleanses the skin, softly renews the surface layer and prepares it for the application of subsequent care products. The toner has a soothing formula with additional moisturising ingredients, which reduces the risk of irritation and tightness.
  2. A cream with retinol – a more concentrated product that works on the deeper layers of the skin. Its regular use helps fight the signs of age-related changes, fine wrinkles and loss of firmness. The product is recommended to be applied in the evening, following the principle of gradually getting the skin used to the active ingredient.
  3. A serum with retinol – these stimulate cell renewal, reduce wrinkles, even out the facial complexion and fight acne. Thanks to their concentrated formula, such products work deeper and faster than ordinary creams, and are especially useful in caring for mature or problem skin.

Given that this is retinol, when using cosmetics with it, in the morning you must use a sunscreen, because it increases the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation.
